The Young Minds of Owasso Ram Artists

By Kenzee Hampton

Gaby Morlock is a Senior art student that has loved art for as long as she can remember. She joined art around 7th grade and that's when she found how much she truly loves art.

Morlock is inspired by what she grew up with, she grew up watching the “Addams Family” (from the 60s) and “Bewitch.” “I grew up on watching the older stuff and it inspires me,” Morlock states, “I like gothic styles.”

With Morlock's passion for gothic styles, she loved ink-tober last month. Ink-tober is during October where the art classes choose topics and learn new techniques with pens and other art utensils. She thrives during Ink-tober because of her love for spooky things she says, “I feel I can express myself because I just love things like that .”

Morlock also liked another project they did. “Expressive Portraits… We traced a picture out of a person and then we used coloring pencils to shade and add stuff to it. It's really fun.”

Morlock plans to go to college for Cosmetology. She plans to continue her art career with face painting.

When Gaby was creating this piece she was thinking,

"If people were plants or small animals, what would they look like or what is their purpose?”

This unfinished piece is beautiful and it is showing that the girl is a flower and her hair is flower pedals, and her dress is made of leaves. She is crying because of how poorly nature is treated and what plants go through. She's supposed to symbolize beauty in nature and that beauty is not always easy.

For this next piece she says, “Those colors always stand out to me and we just drew lines till I got something. For me this flower appeared.”

For this piece Gaby Morlock used her favorite color as a kid to express what the picture is trying to share.

I felt very gracious that Gabby was able to express her art to me and show me her thought process.

Senior Emily Brummett is known for her art style of high contrast and/or saturation. She loves using bright colors in her pieces. Brummett has loved art since she was young. She would get on the internet and would find pictures and learn how to draw from there. She later joined art in middle school and in highschool.

Even though Brummett has had a passion for art for so long she just recently found a new love for gel pens. She exclaims, “[During Ink-tober] that's when I found out that I really enjoy them. They are so fun.”

Something else Brummett has enjoyed too is a personal sustainable investigation. Sustainable investigation students make a question and they create work around their question.

Her question is “What does an error look like inside a skeleton?”  She says, “It opens up a process that I have never done before and so it's basically just a whole new experience.”

“This is storm themed. I grew up on fantasies and my favorite fantasy creature is a dragon.”

“I know this person personally,” Emily Brummett states, “She’s my best friend. The blue stands for how calm she is but the orange is for her fiery personality.

Every artist is always looking for new ways to grow with their abilities to create art, just like our fellow classmates Morlock and Brummett. All artists are different in their own way. Just like Morlock likes gothic styles and Brummett tends to turn to more colorful pieces. Even though all artists have different styles or techniques, art is art and it should be appreciated.

Next time you pass by an art room with drawings, paintings or even sculptures out, think about what the artist might have been thinking while creating it. It will help you find a newly found appreciation for all art and the artist.
