Spring is right around the corner, which means that Owasso High School is eager to perfect the final touches of this semester’s musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.” Coinciding with the setting of the musical, the OHS arts wing has announced the details for their fifth annual, district-wide art contest.

Each year, the department draws inspiration from the theater sector’s spring musical to create an idea for the competition. Considering that this year’s musical is Little Shop of Horrors, what better way to get in the spirit than asking students to make their own potted plant creatures?

The contest is open to all Pre-K through 12th-grade students enrolled in Owasso Public Schools.

Students are not required to have any past art experience, although art classes are currently working on the project for a class grade. Entries can be in either 2D or 3D form as long as they follow the potted plant creature theme. Artists can submit only one piece. For those who are in need of inspiration, the digital entry form provides links to helpful videos for both mediums.

The goal of the contest is to not only provide students with the opportunity to display their unique imaginations but also to aid the theater department in promoting their spring musical.

“Every year, they give us what the musical is gonna be, and we run with it from there,” art teacher Kay Bratcher shared.

Although the art department collectively works on the project, Bratcher is the name to remember.

Bratcher organizes the competition, and all submissions must be made to her— room 10, East Campus.

The judging panel this year consists of a variety of art teachers from all over the Owasso school district, as well as a select few fine art teachers, but there will also be an opportunity for the public to vote on a ‘fan favorite.’

When asked about the prize for the winner of the contest, Bratcher couldn’t give just one answer.

“It depends on how the community comes together for us,” she smiled, “Sometimes the community will give us prizes we can give out.”

Free admissions to the Arkansas Crystal Bridges Museum specialty exhibit and art supplies courtesy of Blick Art Materials are a couple of prizes from years past.

Bratcher also shared that additional rewards include the winning art piece being displayed outside of the OHS Performing Arts Center, the honorary first-place ribbon, and the title of the 2024 District Wide Art Contest Winner. Out of the 500+ submissions the art department receives each year, this title is one to be respected.

The deadline to submit artwork is Thursday, February 15th. A completed entry form with the appropriate contact information must accompany all submissions. Winners will be announced by March 10th. On behalf of the art department, we look forward to seeing your pieces!
