Owasso’s top notch ice cream stops

By Makenzy Holm

Summer is coming up and one of the best ways to stay cool in these next few sweltering months is to go grab a sweet treat from one of the many places that sell ice cream in Owasso. In the past week, I have gone to five different restaurants that sell ice cream to find the best one in town. At each stop I got a simple vanilla ice cream in a cup and rated each one based on flavor, texture and price.

Braum’s: 4/5

The first stop on my delicious trip was none other than Braum’s. Instead of ice cream, I ordered a large vanilla frozen yogurt in a cup. It cost a grand total of $2.39, and gave me exactly what I was looking for on a hot May day. The first bite had me closing my eyes and sighing in pleasure. The rich vanilla was just the right amount of flavor and paired nicely with the creamy smooth texture of the frozen yogurt. All in all, I would give the flavor a 4/5, the texture a 4/5 and the price a 4/5, proving Braum’s a perfect spot for a little frozen pick me up.

McDonald’s: 2/5

The second stop on my sweet journey was McDonald’s, an American staple. Known for their Big Macs and their broken ice cream machines, McDonald’s definitely disappointed. Although their ice cream machine was working, I kind of wished it wasn’t. The total came out to be a whopping $1.39 and boy, I could tell. It honestly tasted like the ice cream was actually part of the machine it came from. The metallic taste made the rest of the experience one I want to forget. In conclusion, I would give the flavor a 1/5, the texture a 2/5 and the price a 5/5, showing that maybe this is not the best place to soothe your ice cream cravings.

Baskin Robbins: 2.5/5

This ice cream from Baskin Robbins was the most expensive by far. While technically being one of the only options on the list that is actually considered ice cream, I don’t think the price was worth the small scoop that seemed like a miniscule portion for even a mouse. While the flavor was decent, it was difficult to enjoy an almost five dollar ice cream when it took the worker a total of 30 seconds to scoop. Overall, I would give the flavor a 3/5, the texture a 3/5 and the price a 1/5.

Andy’s Frozen Custard: 4.5/5

Coming in at $2.79, Andy’s takes the cake for some of the cheapest ice cream, or custard, in this list. Unlike McDonald’s, Andy’s does not have the unmistakable metal taste of the machine. Creamy and soft, the vanilla custard made me feel like I was sitting outside on a hot day with the perfect treat to cool off. In total, I would give the flavor a 5/5, the texture a 4/5 and the price a 5/5.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers: 3.5/5

The final stop on my ice cream-filled drive was Freddy’s, which was also very cheap coming in at $1.99. However, the portion was smaller than what I would have liked. It was also super thick and sort of difficult to work my way through the cup. I felt like I needed to leave it in the sun for a bit so it would melt enough that my spoon could push through the ice cream. Although it took a minute to get a good scoop, once I tasted it, I realized that it was worth it. I would give the flavor a 3/5, the texture a 3/5 and the price a 5/5.

Ice cream is a very important part of my summer and knowing exactly where to go to get the best flavor for the best price is something that I strive to find. If you want good ice cream for a good price this summer, I would recommend going to Braum’s or Andy’s.
