Rams Wrestling Senior Night: the final home duel

By Katelyn Fisher

Senior night is a time to celebrate and showcase our seniors during their last year of high school and, for most, their last year playing the sport they love. Earlier this month, the Owasso Rams wrestling team held their 2024 season senior night against the Berryhill Chiefs. Every duel and tournament has its ups and downs, and this year was no different.

As the night began, the Rams were off to a not-so-great start, with Berryhill in a defining lead. However,  halfway through the duel, the boys picked it up and began to get some points on the board. So far, no senior had lost a match.

Owasso and Berryhill were neck and neck, going back and forth; one would be ahead, and then the other would catch up and gain the lead again. The Rams watched and cheered with hopes that their momentum would continue on and help carry them through to victory.

Most of the team, including Chris Turner, felt the “suspense…I knew that it was going to depend on the heavier weights to finish the battle.”

Finally, after several wins in a row from heavy-weights Caleb Jones, Chris Turner and Jamon Colbert, the duel was over, and the Owasso Rams came out with a win! Not only did the wrestlers win the duel, but every senior on the team won their match. It was a successful night for the team, and especially for the seniors.

Senior wrestler Jaxson Humphries explains, “I thought we did really well as a team, and all the seniors won, so that's really exciting for us!”

The excitement of the win, mixed with the sadness of the final home dual, left seniors unsure of how they felt. This was the last high school home duel for the seniors. Most of them have been teammates since 8th or 9th grade, so nearing the end of their final season was very emotional.

Senior Bryson Humphries expresses his thankfulness, “that I've gotten to experience everything that I have with all of my coaches and teammates.”

With their season coming to a close, the senior wrestlers have started to think about their future. Some wish to continue their wrestling career in college, while others have decided to stop after this year's season. Whichever path they choose, the seniors are confident and eager for what is to come.

“We're all gonna do really well in life,” Humphries affirms. “It's sad that…we're not going to be together for another duel, but I think that everyone’s excited that all of our journeys are going to be different.”

The Rams will continue to work hard to finish the season strong, with hopes of doing well in regionals and state. Every senior wants their last season to end in victory, but there’s no guarantee. Regardless of the results, the seniors are grateful for all their time spent with the wrestling team and look forward to seeing where everyone ends up.
