Street Tacos: Owasso’s New Booming Business

By Jack Fenner

Lately, Owasso has begun to attract more and more street taco restaurants. Whether it be food trucks or hole-in-the-walls, they all have their own way of making the street taco. This week I went to four different restaurants to see how their tacos match up—El Tequila, El Asador Norteño, Tacowasso and Mi Rancho—and will be ranking them from worst to best.

4. El Tequila

I know that El Tequila does not seem like a hole in the wall establishment but seeing how one of the bigger restaurants in Owasso matches up to smaller food trucks was something that I thought would be very interesting. Though I thought that a bigger restaurant would put up a good fight, I was sorely mistaken. The street tacos from El Tequila were very bland and dry. Compared to the other places on this list, this one lags very far behind. Although I was disappointed in these tacos, the experience made me happy to realize that the making of a great street taco was left to the little guys in town.

3. El Asador Norteño

Honestly these top three were very difficult to rank against each other, a lot of their differences can be left up to your personal preference, but 3rd on my list comes El Asador Norteno. El Asador Norteno is a food truck right next to the First Bank of Owasso that, unlike El Tequila, primarily makes street tacos. The reason this one didn’t make it any higher was because it lacked some of the flavor that I found at the higher ranks on this list. It had all the components, cilantro, lime, onion and salsa verde, but I feel that the meat didn’t have as much flavor as I was hoping for.

2. Tacowasso

This is probably the most well known location on the list. It has become increasingly popular over the last couple of months and for good reason. I'm sure that on a different day this place could have easily been first on my list as it is so close in quality to the first rank. The tacos were amazing, everything tasted just right. I also got a steak quesadilla with this one and it was great. Usually, places that serve meat quesadillas go very light on the meat, but Tacowasso ensures that you get a bang for your buck by filling the quesadillas to the brim with meat. This place overall has great and affordable food.

1. Mi Rancho

With the number one spot comes Mi Rancho. This place is a little hard to find as it is a tiny place in the back of a Mexican grocery store of the same name. After walking into this place you can tell that the food is going to be authentic and tasty. Honestly, I think that the atmosphere is what puts this place on top. The taco’s were wonderful, not dry, great seasoning and cheap as can be, coming in at around $1.25 per taco, making it the cheapest on the list. If you're looking to curb your craving for tacos, then this is the place to be.
