Band Season Starts with a Fast Tempo

By Kenzee Hampton

With all the unpredictable changes this year, the Owasso band has had to be quick on their toes.

Band Director Chris Harris said, “When we prepare for a season, we start designing our marching band shows and putting the music and the drill formations together; we actually start doing that in January of the year before … Obviously that kind of came to a halt at spring break when we were unsure of what was going to happen.”

Even though the band was unsure of the season, the staff were still preparing lessons online to better the students. Band is not only trying to better themselves but better others by cheering them on. They want to still cheer on their teams but in a safe manner.

Harris said, “We had to redesign the wheel on that last Friday at the Union game. It was the first time we had the full band. We did not put them all on the stands because of distance but we did take them out for our pregame show.”

When Covid-19 makes it nearly impossible to overcome, the Owasso Rams will find a way to make it possible while still being safe.

Harris also adds, “The quarantine issue is starting to take over … we prepared a performance for last Friday and after school … I found out that eight kids in the band got quarantined so then we had eight holes out there”

Even though Covid-19 is causing problems the Owasso Band is trying to make the best of it.

Harris said, “We are grateful for any opportunities. I will tell you what we are most grateful for now that we studied Covid a little bit. It kinda made its appearance lowkey last fall. If it would have amped up pretty early we might not have been able to go to the Rose Parade last year, which was a huge thing.“

Looking on the brightside, the Owasso Band is very thankful to be doing all they are able to do. They are eager and proud to cheer on their Rams on Friday nights.

Harris states, “...Football, cheer, pom, everybody who can get around the band. We put our fingers up and we sing the alma mater and that's what it's really all about. That’s the one thing we can really do at any time … regardless of the situation. That song is what brings us together”

With the time of social distancing, we must understand that even with the space between us we are all still Owasso Rams! Come to the home football game on October 9, October 30 or November 6 to help your Owasso band cheer on the Rams. #RamPride
