Mother’s Day: gifts to make her feel special

It’s approaching that time of year when flowers are blooming and spring is returning. With the surge of warm weather and pretty skies, the calendar stands as a stark reminder that a big day is coming up: Mother’s Day. Personally, I value my mom greatly, and I recognize that she does so much for me and our family. Therefore, I love to make her feel special in light of all the hard work she’s dedicated to being a devoted mother. I compiled a few ways you can make your mom feel just as special on this day that is all about her.

Sentimental Gifts

Gift Idea #1: Video slideshow

A couple years back, I was feeling creative around Mother’s Day. I decided to make a video packed with a slideshow of family photos, silly photos and good memories of our family. In the background, I added an instrumental track of her favorite song at the time at low volume, and I added a voiceover of myself. In the voiceover, I recounted all the traits that make my mom so wonderful, talked about my favorite memories with her (and had my siblings talk too), and let her know how much she is appreciated and seen. Choose this option if you really want to make her cry! Warning: it will make her super emotional.

Gift Idea #2: Scrapbook

For people on the less technological side, and those who would rather get down with some arts and crafts, this option is for you. For a scrapbook, I would gather some family photos and other snippets that remind you of her (tickets to a place you visited together, a song that reminds you of her, a recipe you two love, etc). I would gather materials of her favorite color and run with a style that suits her tastes. She’s sure to love this memory book that she can keep for all the years to come.

Gift #3: Write a letter

While this option seems simple, many moms would appreciate this just the same. As their children grow into young adults, moms and teenagers can often butt heads, so she would love to be reminded that you do still care about her. So, in this letter, talk about what you love about her, make her struggles feel seen and let her know that you’re there for her. You can even write a poem if you’re skilled with words. In reality, you’ll probably make her shed a tear or two if you get sentimental and remind her of all the ways she’s loved.

Gift #4: Take up house responsibilities for a week!

Now this one is rather obvious, but your mom would love it if you took up some cleaning, cooking and other house jobs that need to be done. Give her some time to relax after work or on the weekends and take away some of the responsibilities she has to deal with on a daily basis. She’s sure to love you for this one! (Note: you should already be helping her from time to time; you really need to go the extra mile here)

Gift #5: Make her a playlist

This one is applicable if you and your mom share the same music taste or if you have a good idea of the music she likes. Go to Spotify, or any other platform you use, and create a playlist of songs that she loves or songs that remind you of her. Then, make a corresponding list explaining why each song reminds you of her. You could even get specific and delve deep into specific lyrics. She’ll be happy to know you think of her and that you took the time to do this.

Material Gifts

Gift #6: Flowers

This is super obvious, but get her flowers! More specifically, her favorite flowers. They’re beautiful, and they stand as a reminder that you were thinking of her. Be mindful when picking them out, and be sure to pick a bouquet she will love.

Gift #7: Something that corresponds to her hobby

Many people have hobbies, even moms, when they find the time out of their busy schedules. They could be interested in a multitude of things, like art, sewing, crocheting, fitness, baking, cooking, music, reading, etc. If your mom has a specific activity she involves herself in, purchase something that will contribute to that hobby! Or, if she collects anything, adding to her collection would be an item of great value.

Gift #8: Gift card to her favorite coffee shop/restaurant

Many parents love coffee, so a gift card to your mom’s favorite coffee place is a perfect and practical present that your mom will appreciate. On the chance that your mom isn’t a coffee fan, go for a gift card to her favorite restaurant instead.

Gift #9: A quality perfume

A quality fragrance is a good go-to for mothers. Most moms probably have a signature scent, or fragrance notes that they gravitate towards. If she’s been talking about a particular perfume or has mentioned one previously, you should consider purchasing it for her. A nice scent can boost her confidence and make her feel as gorgeous as she truly is.

Gift #10: Take her on a day out!

If you two love to spend quality time together, this option would be fun for both of you. Take her out to eat at her favorite restaurant, maybe go shopping and buy her a couple of things, or you could even have a spa day or indulge in her favorite hobby. Make her feel special and let her know you love her by making memories.
