Mock Trial Didn’t Win, but They Did Overcome

By Emily Holson

As the school year draws closer to an end, so do many of its most notable extra curricular activities and organizations. Just last week, one of Owasso’s mock trial teams (Team Lewis) finished its season at State Finals, fighting their case to the bitter end.

Upsetting it was, indeed.

Unfortunately, despite the vigorous practice schedule, our team could simply not overcome the final hurdle.

Still, the year’s training did not at all fail our mockers, says St. George. “Near the end, [practice] was every day. Honestly, I don’t think we could have prepared any differently. We just had weird circumstances, and I won’t speak for the team, but we all did our very best.”

Owasso lost to McAlister Black: a senior team. Our students faced this opponent with a majority of their team being junior mockers. Even still, they managed to compete with McAlister Black and many others, ultimately making it all the way to the final round of State competition.

Despite this momentous achievement, the team’s spirits did suffer at the hands of this loss.

“We cried for two hours,” laments St. George. “Then we went to Waffle House and cried some more. It was quite a vibe, but the reactions were varied. Some people were ticked, some were sad and some were just, I guess, content.”

As a senior, St. George’s mock trial experience could realistically end here. However, with nearly an entire team of juniors still ready and willing to practice and compete, Owasso’s closing argument, thankfully, has yet to come. We look forward to seeing their future successes, as well as their failures; either way, they’ll be battling for the top.
