World travel club: the journey begins

By Hannah Stephens

Have you ever felt that you wanted to share your culture with other people? Are you interested in other people’s cultures from around the world? Whether you’re looking for educational opportunities or just want to try different food from around the world, Owasso High School has the club for you: the World Travel Club.

But what exactly is the world travel club?

Mrs. Copeland, the founder, states that in the club “We’re going to explore different cultures. So our biggest thing is… we’re going to pick a country every month and just dive into it. I’m letting students pick whatever country [and] we’ll have different foods we’ll bring in as well from different cultures.”

This club has been in the making for a while now. Mrs. Copeland started it because she has a passion for learning about the traditions and intricacies of different nations around the world. She also works with EF Tours, which takes students to other countries to learn more about them.

Mrs. Copeland recalls, “Being asked to be that [EF Tours travel] leader this year… kind of inspired that, but also Geography Now, which I love that YouTube channel, is what basically… inspired the club.”

This world travel club acts as a way to make exploring a plethora of countries more convenient from the comfort of your own classroom while still being able to show off the beauty of these different cultures.

Still, you might be asking how this club can be beneficial to you.

Mrs. Copeland believes it is important for people to join “to expand their minds and make sure that they know that this isn’t the whole world. There’s so much more out there to explore and to get to know. It's important, especially now, getting that experience and getting knowledge from different cultures. It gets us out of our shells.”

Overall, the club provides a wonderful opportunity to try new foods, listen to music from different countries and immerse yourself in cultures from around the world. If you are interested in joining the world travel club, talk to Mrs. Copeland in Lab 6 on the West campus. Members meet Thursdays from 2:45 p.m. to 3:25 p.m.. If you’re willing to expand your mind and try new things, the world travel club is where your journey begins.
