Short but Sweet: A Sugar Llamas Review

Sugar Llamas is a coffee-donut-ice cream shop hybrid with delicious coffee, sweet donuts and even sweeter staff. Located in Owasso, Sugar Llamas is a new addition to the community. Upon entering, I was greeted by several friendly faces – and even some familiar ones.

“I like to think everyone enjoys their jobs - I mean, you can tell it’s pretty laid back in here,” the manager said to me with a smile and a chuckle, gesturing toward the vibrantly painted walls and smiling employees.

As I started ordering, the manager offered six different flavors of donuts as the crowd favorites to try. Alongside that, a caramel macchiato, a scoop of Moose Tracks ice cream and an espresso vanilla malt for my mom, the order totaled to only $16. Not only was service fast and friendly, it was well priced.

Looking at the coffee menu, I wasn’t sure what to pick because of how little coffee I’ve had in my life, so I asked for whatever they would give someone who doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth. The result was a delicious caramel macchiato that helped ebb the large amount of sugar waiting just seconds away (as well as an espresso malt which was also very good but still too sweet for me).

The ice cream selection, while having lots of options, was very straight-forward. Customers can have it in a cup, on a cone or on mini donuts with many toppings to choose from. I opted for the Moose Tracks ice cream cup with vanilla ice cream lined with hot fudge and topped with chocolate turtles. All-in-all, there are plenty of options that get as basic or complex as you could ask for.

Now for the main dish. To be completely transparent, I assumed the donuts would be too overloaded with sugar to be distinguishable from one another. I could not have been farther from the truth; the Boss Hog donut had maple drizzle and bacon bits on it, making it one of my favorites. The S’mores flavor had a chocolate drizzle with what I can only assume was drizzled marshmallow fluff (no clue how they pulled that off, I’m impressed) and a graham cracker dusting to add a slight crunch to the soft texture of the donut. Next was the Hazelnutty flavor, being one of the more simple options that I tried, including (you guessed it) Nutella and vanilla drizzles. It may have been basic, but it was definitely tasty. The Flintstone flavor was another rudimentary one, consisting of vanilla drizzle and Fruity Pebbles cereal, yet again offsetting the soft texture of the donut and adding a fruity flavor to set it apart from the rest of the menu. Next up was the Peanut Butter Cup flavor, meeting the expectations of everyone’s favorite chocolate and peanut butter candy. Despite being last in this list, the Total Turtle flavor was another of my personal favorites, consisting of chocolate and caramel, staying true to the turtles in the Moose Tracks ice cream.

Overall, everything I tried at this wonderful and cozy establishment was fantastic and I’ll definitely be trying it again. Not only was the food great, but seeing such a friendly group of people working together with the same sense of pride and passion was a much appreciated site. Even just a few short minutes spent getting coffee before work or school is enough to know that your Sugar Llama puts care into your coffee.
