Swinging for the Fences

By Ian Busking

One of the most popular sports in our town is baseball. Throughout the past years, the baseball team has won many games which has led them to winning championships for the school. The baseball team is currently ranked twenty-third in the nation and are trying to keep the upward trend of winning. There are many key roles on the team that are needed to help them win, including every single player and coach.

I am going to dive deeper into a couple of the Owasso Baseball players lives because, without these people, Owasso would not be as successful as they are. Their passion for baseball could not have just started out of the blue… so where did it all begin?

Junior Jaden Johanassen recalls that, “I have been playing the game since I was three years old and I wouldn’t feel the same without it.”

Johanassen has had a lot of people that have supported him throughout his uprising career, but there is one person who started his passion for sports.

“Michael Jordan is my biggest inspiration. He went from not making his highschool basketball team to becoming one of the best players of all time. Anytime I ever doubt my abilities, I think back to when he didn’t make the team and it gives me the fuel to keep working harder.”

Winning every single game is very unlikely, but Owasso has only experienced losses a couple times this year. With this, it’s still important to note that losing, no matter how often, can bring you closer to the team or pull you further apart.

Johanassen states that, “I view my team the same way after every game. There’s always something that the team needs to work on whether the result is a win or a loss. This team has a lot of talent and I will never think less of them—even after losing.”

Junior Brennan Phillips agrees and also adds that, “We are all hyped when we win, but when we lose, it is very humbling.”

What comes with winning and losing is something that people can look back on when they are older. There are good and bad memories, but they all make a player the person they are today.

Phillips reminices, “Throwing a complete game against Jenks and striking twenty out of the twenty-one outs has been a great couple of memories that I remember.”

All of these great moments are fun to look back at, but there is one main goal that the boys are wanting to achieve this year… “a state championship” Phillips exclaims.

Johanassen further adds, “We keep our heads high and...our eyes on the prize at all times.

Follow the Owasso Rams Baseball team as they keep competing for a state championship. It is a long road ahead for the Rams but if there is anyone who can do it, it is them.
