2022 was a great year for music. From the long-awaited return of Beyonce, to the rise of Steve Lacy to pop-stardom, mainstream music hasn’t had many dull moments this past year. With an abundance of headline-grabbing events and chart-smashing records, independent music has had few chances to shine through to mainstream music culture. But those tuned in to the underground scene know the post-Covid influx of creativity and ingenuity has had a wonderful impact on the culture. 2022 saw acts such as Soul Glo and Turnstile, who have been formulating their sound independently for years, reach critical-acclaim with their revolutionary releases. Acts like Big Thief and Beach House, both already well established, have taken the time to produce lengthy epics fully encapsulating their definitive sound. For those who might have just missed some of these impactful and beautiful records, here is a list of some great releases from 2022.

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

Big Thief’s sprawling fifth album was released on February 11, 2022. The indie-folk powerhouse has a very solid catalog, but the new record solidified their reputation as one of the greatest bands in the indie genre. Retreating for months in several isolated locations, the band recorded hours of material. Those sessions birthed Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. Pulling from a wide variety of genres and sounds, the ambitious 80-minute run time is anything but boring.

Black Midi - Hellfire

On July 15, 2022, Black Midi returned with their third studio album Hellfire. The fusion outfit, drawing from a long list of influences, pull together a cohesive and definitive sound. Black Midi arrived on the scene almost fully formed, but they have still found ways to further prove their elite musicianship and artistic vision. While it can seem jarring initially, Hellfire begs to be explored and experienced. The intricate, meticulous amalgamation of genres and sounds will intrigue everyone from beginners to the most experienced listeners.

Beach House - Once Twice Melody

The iconic duo returned to the scene on February 18, 2022, with their eighth studio album of epic proportions. Arriving in 2004, Beach House has held their place as the definitive act of the dream-pop genre. They have held their vision steady and continually explored consistent themes and genre sounds. Once Twice Melody was introduced in pieces, as the large amount of material might have been hard to digest all at once. The sprawling suite features a consistent stream of great tracks with stunning production. The pretty, dreamy sound of Beach House is sure to intrigue and inspire.

Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems

Brewing in the underground scene for several years, Soul Glo released their breakthrough record Diaspora Problems on March 25, 2022. They have found success and acclaim by staying true to hardcore punk roots with a unique modern perspective. Coming from a predominately black band, Diaspora Problems introduces unique cultural and political themes to the often homogenous genre. This record is not for the faint-of-ears, the breakneck pace and heavy instrumentals pair with the gritty vocals to form an uncompromisingly blunt musical statement.

Danger Mouse & Black Thought - Cheat Codes

The long-awaited collaboration record dropped on August 12, 2022. Esteemed producer Danger Mouse teams up with legendary emcee Black Thought (of the Roots) to create one of the most exciting hip-hop releases in the past few years. The lyricism is incredibly dense, and pairs well with the flowing, hypnotic production. For many, this collaboration was a match made in heaven. Both artists being well established and acclaimed, the duo bring out the best in each other’s sound. For those who gravitate to rap, this release is one not to miss.
