Out for Revenge

By Jackson Nester

The Owasso Girls Soccer team didn’t get the result they were looking for last year as their season abruptly ended when COVID-19 made its way into the United States. This meant a season was completely wiped out for now Seniors Cierra Gann and Chloe Wilkins. These two are very passionate about the sport and were devastated when the news hit that their season was gone and there was nothing to do about it. However, the two have been putting in work this offseason to make sure they wouldn’t let their last season go to waste. I got the chance to talk to the two Seniors and their expectations for this upcoming season.

“Our goal this season is of course to make it to the championship, but that means we can’t overlook any of the teams we play and have to take each game at a time.” Wilkins stated.

This is, of course, what every athlete says when talking about their expectations before a season, but I could just tell by talking to the two that they were dedicated and excited for this upcoming season. However, this team has been going through an uphill battle with having to go through a team quarantine which put them out of practice for two weeks.

“The quarantine really set us back with having to stay in our houses for two weeks. We weren’t able to practice or meet up” Wilkins said.

This meant that other teams in their district got the leg up on them for that two weeks and the team would have to work extra hard to catch back up with their competition. We won’t know how much of a setback this really was until the season starts in a couple of days, and as the season gets nearer that also means the opportunity for this team to get to go on a trip that they’ve been fundraising for since 2019.

“We’ve been fundraising for a team trip to play soccer in Alabama since last year and have raised over 45,000 dollars to go and with it being cancelled last year, this is our last chance to go.”

This is not the only last chance these seniors have when talking about high school. As well as getting closer to a potential trip to Alabama, the two are also getting closer to graduation.

“I’m really excited for this upcoming season and all that comes with it, but I can feel the sense of sadness creeping in as graduation rolls around.” Gann remarked.

There may be a sense of sadness regarding high school for these two, but the two have an optimistic season to look forward to and  both have bright futures ahead of them with both going off to college following this season. Gann is planning to attend Robert Morris University and Wilkins is set to attend Northern Oklahoma College.

The two kick off their season on Tuesday, February 23rd against Sand Springs so make sure to go cheer on your Rams as they look to start their season off with a win.
