Coaches Interview: Owasso Track, Coach Parker

By Ian Busking

Cut short by the coronavirus in the spring of 2020, the Owasso track team as well as many other sports came to a end earlier than anyone expected. Before the season concluded, the Rams ran in a few indoor and outdoor meets to show how hard they had been working in the offseason under Coach Parker.

The veteran head track coach, Steve Parker, has been coaching the sport for twenty six years in Owasso.

Coach Parker has racked up many accolades such as; coaching multiple state champion teams, athletes and many other kids throughout his career. Being inducted into the hall of fame as a coach for Owasso he has reflected on those achievements.

“My biggest achievements would be all of the success the program has gone through, I have coached a lot of kids and to watch them succeed has been great to watch,” Said Parker.

There are many things that coaches have to do, such as making sure all the athletes are in the right events, coming up with workouts for practices, and building relationships with everyone in the program, but there are some certain aspects that he enjoys the most.

“I am a very competitive person. So, I love competing and watching the kids compete in track meets in all of their events,” Said Parker.

With the loss of most of last year, this offseason is very important to the track team. They practice and workout every day to prepare for the upcoming season.

For what he is most excited for in the 2020-2021 track season, Parker said, “I am excited to see the kids who lost a season last year and compete this year.”

Steve Parker has done an amazing job building the program up the past twenty six years and plans to keep it going.

Keep up with the Owasso Track team this spring as they have something big to prove with the loss of last year's coronavirus taken season.
